XIAOMI REDMI Y2 (REDMI S2) Preview

Xiaomi's latest Redmi Y2 model is expected to launch in India on June 7. It will be an Amazon exclusive and will come with a ₹ 8999.00 starting price tag. It will have Custom MI user interface and will come with the latest Android v8.1 (Oreo). It is speculated that, the same S2 model will renamed as Y2 in Indian market aiming for a continuation of their Y1 model. The device may face tough competition from Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 priced ₹ 10999.00.

Display and Design

The phone will release in 3 color variants, Rose Gold, Champagne Gold, Platinum Silver. Y2 will have a 8.1mm thickness which looks a bit lofty in the price range. 170 gm weight will also be a drawback from the design side.

The phone will have 5.99 inch IPS LCD screen. It is having a screen to body ratio of 74.64% and is clear that the phone doesn't utilizes the full screen. The screen resolution is 720*1440 pixels. Lower pixel density of 269ppi makes the display category even more worst.

Storage and Performance

Xiaomi hasn't disappointed in case of storage and performance. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 MSM8953 chipset and Octa core, 2 GHz, Cortex A53 processors will give excellent performance. Adreno 506 Graphics card, although looks older is capable of handling user interface well. 3 GB RAM is also gives an edge to effortless staging.

32 GB in-built storage looks great and is expected to get a user available storage of 28 GB. Along with this Y2 gives additional storage option up to 256 GB.

Battery and Camera

12 MP + 5 MP Dual Primary Camera looks great and is having a F2.2 Physical Aperture. The dual-color LED Flash will enhance the photo's in the dark places. The camera will capture 4000*3000 pixel images and can record videos of 1920*1080 @ 30 fps, 1280*720 @ 30 fps. The primary camera is having the basic Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Face detection, Touch to focus features. The 16 MP front camera will aid in capturing high quality selfies. Front LED Flash will give great quality selfies at any occasions.

3080 mAh Li-ion battery looks average in the price tag. It hasn't improved its battery capacity contrast its previous Y1 version.

Other Features

It is having the 3.5 mm Audio Jack. The finger print scanner is placed in the back side of the phone similar to Y1. Bluetooth v4.2 looks a bit older and Redmi still keeps its drawback in this area.The phone will feature standard connectivity options. Wi-Fi Direct, Mobile Hotspot are the basic from these.It will give USB connectivity for Storage, Charging and to connect microUSB 2.0.

Verdict

The device is not best from the Redmi range. Y2 only have a few notable changes to its predecessor. Performance criteria looks great with Octa core processor and 3 GB RAM. It is also having a great pair of cameras. Y2 maintained the same design of Y1. You can experience the Android Oreo from Y2. There are only few reasons to buy the Redmi Y2 than its predecessor.
