Openers: Currently, Indian test opening line up is handled by Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay. There was another unsuccessful combo under Kohli's captaincy, Lokesh Rahul-Murali Vijay. Comparing the current line up to the past, there is a huge difference in the performance. No one will forgot the partnerships generated by Virender Sehwag- Gautham Gambhir, Virender Sehwag- Wasim Jaffer. Sunil Gavaskar had exceptional records in this position. There will be no comparison for these players in the current Indian team.
Top Order: Currently India have Virat Kohli, Chetheshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane manages the top order department. Rohit Sharma also promoted to this position in some instances. Although, they are good in partnership making, We had a golden top order line up in the past. The top 3 pillars, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar made some match winning duties in that position. Sourav Ganguly was also a pick in the position. Before that or After, India has never produced such a strong middle order combination.
Middle Order: India is having an inexperienced middle order in the test cricket. Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin have seen struggling in the middle order. Rather than limiting the wicket loss, these players are aiming for increasing the run flow. But in the past, India had some exceptional performers in the position. MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Anil Kumble were ruling this position in the past. They were great performers in the position. Also we shouldn't forgot Kapil Dev's flair in this spot.
Fast Bowlers: India produced greatest players in this domain. Current Indian pace departments are handled by Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Jasprith Bumrah, Muhammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. They are having best time in the field. Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar being best in the format. But India had some legends in this criteria. Zaheer Khan,Javagal Sreenath,Kapil Dev are some of the greatest.
Spinners: We cannot forget the 10 wicket in an achievement by Anil Kumble in an test Innings. India had some greatest test spinners in the past. Harbhajan Singh,BS Bedi, BS Chandrashekhar, Erapalli Prasanna, S Venkata Raghavan are the well known among them. All the players had pivotal role in the team on their respective occasions. Currently India have only finger countable test spinners. R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja takes the responsibility in this area. But compared to the past, India is just having an average spin order.
All Rounders and Fielding Department
All-rounders: Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin are the best all rounders in the Indian test team. We can also add Hardik Pandya to the list. Kapil Dev is one of the notable all rounders in the past. He was exceptional with the ball and bat. Irfan Pathan, Ravi Shastri, Vinoo Mankad are also placed in the greatest all-rounders list.
Fielding Department: Fielders have crucial roles in the test cricket. They are not allowed to make any single mistakes in the longest cricket format. In test cricket first slip and silly point is considered as the most important fielding positions. Currently, the silly point is handled by Murali Vijay. Pujara, Kohli takes the responsibility in some occasions. But we cannot forget the achievements by Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Wasim Jaffer in this area.
Wicket Keepers are one of the key players in test cricket. A small mistake from behind the stump may produce huge setbacks. After the retirement of MS Dhoni from test cricket, Wriddhiman Saha appointed as the new wicket keeper. He had a decent records behind the stumps. But we cannot compare Dhoni's quickness with Saha. Dhoni is notably one of the greatest wicket keeper in the test cricket. Considering the above all criteria's, Current Indian test team lacks experience and talented players. The arrival of shortest cricket has defunct the beauty of test cricket.
